YELLOW - Elevated Condition

This report is a yellow because of the high temperatures anticipated for Saturday and Sunday with Sunday being forecast in the 90 degrees F range.  Note that we may send out a notice that the Nichols Community Center (690 9th Avenue) will be open as a cooling center.  Be aware so any of your neighbors and family can be advised of a place to go if needed.

The June 2nd 'field meeting' of the whole Pierce County Council including our representative, Robyn Denson, held at the Heart Church was a well-run meeting.  Reporting the status of the Fox Island bridge wasa major part of the meeting.  We learned more about the progression of the bridge replacement.  Important points were: 1.  The bridge cost is listed as extremely high now to be all inclusive knowing that many changes (reductions) will be made in the final design.  (For example, if we had permitting underway when changes (increases) were made that would require starting permitting all over again!)  2. More than Pierce County (State and Federal) are aware and looking into funding already.  Adison Richards commented on what the State Legislature is already looking into.  3.  The bridge cost is not planned to be borne exclusively by Fox Island residents.  4.  Any funding directly from Fox Island residents will have to be approved by Fox Island residents.  5.  Starting construction on a new bridge is optimistically forecast at 2030.

More to come on this.  Stay tuned.

As mentioned in this space before, there are several quick (10 minute) updates on several subjects that are of importance to us on Fox Island. They are on PBS’s ‘Weathered’ series and they are good for all – mom, dad, and the kids, too (as parents see fit). Here are our picks, so far as we have worked through the first 2 seasons: Season 1, episodes 1,5,6,7. Season 2, episodes1,4,7,8. Stream them if you can and send a comment to this website letting us know your opinion of its value to you. You can also advise us of any good emergency programs and/or prep material that you discover and believe will help us secure our safety in a major catastrophe.

Don’t forget to check out the 'Prepare in a Year' monthly advice column each month, or by topic, for 2025. The month of June will be advising on food storage (30 days worth!). This is easier than you might think. There are several ways to get to your protection level. And don't forget that med's and water are a part of the equation.
